As you may well know, each month we have one dog that is chosen as our Barker of the Month. Every month, the method of how the dog is chosen is different. For the month of July, we asked our customers to submit their dog's photo and why they felt their dog should be Barker of the Month. We were overwhelmed with the amazing stories of such wonderful dogs, but one story stood out and tugged at our hearts. We'd like to introduce to you our Barker of the Month for July. His name is Scooter and he is 11 years old. Take a moment to read Scooter's story and you'll agree that he definitely deserves to be Southern Barker's "July Barker of the Month!"

Hey there Southern Barker,

My momma told me about this contest to be the Barker of the Month for July! Momma said that if I win, I get treats… man, do I love some treats! So let me tell you a little bit about me and hopefully I can be the next Barker of the Month.

My name is Scooter Wooter Pooter Tooter but you can call me Scooter for short and momma says I am 11 years old. I look pretty good for 11, don’t I! My momma found me when I was a tiny little thing, the doctor man guessed my age to be around 5 weeks old. Someone didn’t want me anymore and tossed me out on the side of Harrodsburg Road. I think it was because I was sooo sick as a puppy. Lucky for me they left me in the perfect spot for my momma to see me. She wasn’t looking for a fur baby at the time, but one look at this handsome face, and she fell in love. I mean, can you blame her!

The doctor man fixed me up, I was in pretty bad shape, I was skinny, and had fleas, ticks, several different intestinal parasites and a bad cough! But they gave me some shots (OUCH!), some yummy tasting medicine and momma took me home!

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to stay at home with her for very long. Momma came home from class one day and I was very sick. She rushed me back to the doctor! My tummy was hurting really bad and I couldn’t stand up. The doctor man, looked me over and ran a test and momma looked really nervous and scared. The doctor man said, I would have to stay there, I wasn’t allowed to go back home with momma. He said, I had Parvo. Even though Momma and I had only been together for a couple days, we were already smitten with each other. The doctor man, told my momma that the chances of my surviving were not good, but I wasn’t ready to go, we had just found each other. I got a lot worse in the first few days, I was so weak, I couldn’t lift my head. I don’t remember but momma said I stopped breathing once and had to have CPR. I spent two weeks in ICU isolation. Momma would come every day to hang out with me, she would hold me and pet me and tell me to keep fighting. I did, I wanted to go home. Well, After two weeks, I was feeling a lot better and momma came and took me home! The doctor man said I was a miracle.

Life has been great, I am one lucky mutt! My momma takes such good care of me, see the Parvo and other illnesses I had when I was a puppy, left some permeant damage. I have a lot of issue with my tummy, I get sick a lot, momma says its acid reflux and something called mega esophagus. Momma had to make me a special food stand and I have to eat a special diet. The food is pretty good and I get yummy treats that make my tummy feel better. But other than that, I am a pretty typical hound. Food is Life! Especially the food that I find on the ground. Momma, tells me no, but I think, if she tried it, she would like it. It’s amazing!! I love me some squeaky toys too, I have about a million! I love them all. Momma tries to throw some of them away sometimes, but I just look at her with these big brown eyes and she changes her mind. How can you say no to this face! Really?!?

Anyways, I’m getting older now and life has definitely thrown us some curve balls in the last year. Momma has been crying a lot, and she told one of my human friends that I have cancer. I am not sure what that is but it always makes momma cry when she talks about it. I still feel pretty good, I get tired real quick and sometimes my body aches. On those days, momma get the heated pad out and makes me a nice warm bed, it helps with the aches. One day momma sat down with me and was rubbing my ears and she told me to let her know when I’m ready to say goodbye. My momma has always been selfless like that, she knows one day it will be too painful for me and I will need to cross rainbow bridge and wait for her there.

But until then, We are living and loving life, momma takes me exploring, we have gone to the beach, I really liked the sand but those waves are scary! We have gone to the Red River Gorge and I got to smell all these new smells. That place is amazing. We go on road trips to Michigan and South Carolina a few times a year. I get walks and treats every night and of course I get to sleep in the bed next to my momma. I love my momma so much and I am so lucky that she found me that day, so many years ago.

I hope this helps with your decision to make me the July’s Barker of the Month! I know momma would love to have me in the calendar next year, so everyone can get a chance to admire this handsome face! I mean come on… I am one handsome mutt!

I hope you all have amazing day!

Love,

Scooter Wooter Pooter Tooter!
