Tomorrow is Independence Day!

Like most Americans you are probably planning to spend the day with friends and family to enjoy the festivities, the cookouts and of course, watching the movie Independence Day. But no 4th of July would be complete without the fireworks. While enjoying the celebration, you must remember to keep your pet in mind. Most pets are terrified of fireworks and will often panic when they hear the “booms.” Some pets tend to run off when they hear the tell-tale sign of a firework and most end up lost, injured or even killed. Here are some tips on how to help your pet stay safe this 4th of July.

NEVER USE FIREWORKS AROUND PETS

This one may sound like a no-brainer but even unused fireworks are a danger to pets. Some fireworks contain potentially toxic substances such as arsenic, potassium nitrate, and other heavy metals. Lit fireworks can cause burn to pets and can cause damage to their face and paws.

2. MAKE SURE YOUR PET IS PROPERLY IDENTIFIED

If your pet manages to get loose and become lost, it will be harder to get them back without the proper identification. Microchips and ID Tags are a great way to make sure your pet can easily make its way back to you.

3. KEEP YOUR PETS INDOORS AT ALL TIMES

Even if you have a fenced in back yard make sure that your dog is safely locked away indoors. When dogs go into a panic they tend to break their restraints or even jump a fence in a panicked frenzy to find safety. Remember that even though the 4th of July is only for one night, some people set off fireworks days afterwards. Consider putting your pet in a safe escape-proof room or a crate during the fireworks and parties.

4. LEAVE YOUR PETS AT HOME

If you are going to a 4th of July party or a fireworks display, it’s better to leave your dog at home. Your pet has a greater chance of being spooked and running away if they are in an unfamiliar environment.

5. KEEP HAZARDOUS MATERIALS AWAY

Things like sparklers, glow sticks, charcoal and kabob skewers can be very dangerous if your dog gets ahold of them. Consider putting your dog in their crate if you are entertaining guests. It can be hard to keep an eye on your dog as well as entertain.

6. CHECK YOUR YARD AFTERWARDS

Make sure to check your yard for any firework debris before allowing your pet to play. Even if you didn't set off fireworks, debris can make its way into your yard.

Enjoy your Fourth of July celebrations! Just remember to give your pet extra treats and belly rubs because it’s going to be harder for them to celebrate. We hope you and your furry friends stay safe this Fourth of July!
